Democratizing Machine Learning (ML)

Machine Learning for the Open Source Community

EvoluData is pioneering the practical application of machine-learning for enterprise use cases and we’re using a PHP based solution to deliver customer outcomes.

The opportunity for machine learning in your enterprise

Machine learning is a genre of computing formed around computer programs able to learn for themselves without being explicitly programmed. It’s been around for decades, but only in the last few years has it become a solidly reliable and trusted vehicle to solve enterprise information management problems.

On May 11, 1997, an IBM computer called IBM ® Deep Blue ® beat the world chess champion after a six-game match: two wins for IBM, one for the champion and three draws. The success of Deep Blue charted the beginning of the machine learning revolution.

The democratization of machine learning

Machine learning began as a highly complex sphere of computer programming that at one time was only accessible to dedicated practitioners that invested in a lifetime of education on the subject. Fortunately, it’s different today. Through the years, the mystery behind machine learning has abated with more and more knowledge being shared as time has gone by. Advances in cloud computing, together with a maturing level of ‘digital understanding’ within the computing industry, has revolutionized the enabling technologies that make machine learning accessible to non-practitioners.

The ML/AI hype-curve

You might be wondering ‘What’s the difference between artificial intelligence and machine learning?’ It’s more a question of ambition. Where machine learning is considered a soft-ware application that allows machines to learn from data without being programmed explicitly, AI is a bigger concept and it’s more about creating intelligent machines that simulate human thinking. The fact of the matter is, machine learning itself has still a long way to go in terms of its potential real-world value. We’ve only just scratched the surface. There’s so much more society and commerce can do with machine learning without moving to a "Terminator" perspective of a future run by robots.

A recent study of more than 2000 work activities my McKinsey and Co. reported that about half of the activities (not jobs) carried out by workers could be automated using known technologies. They suggest,"…most workers – from welders to mortgage brokers to CEOs – will work alongside rapidly evolving machines. The nature of these occupations will likely change as a result."

Your next steps

If you’re curious about Machine Learning and A.I. but you’re not totally sure what it can do for your business, one of the best things you can do is to book an exploratory discussion with EvoluData and together we will walk through how your business works today and the likely opportunities to lever competitive advantage from Machine Learning based on the library of examples we’ve curated.
